Computer Lab.   Carden Academy’s technology program provides students with practical instruction in this important life skill.  Our technology curriculum is based on a series called Trajectory by Global Academics and is carried out in our 21-station computer lab.  This comprehensive program incorporates Microsoft applications for all grades in an age appropriate way.  Mavis Beacon is used to teach and enhance keyboarding skills.

Junior Primary through Second Grade.  Students learn computer terminology, beginning keyboarding and mouse skills, how to navigate the computer, and how to gain access to websites that encourage early reading.  Students enjoy creating original art in the KidPix program and receive an introduction to Microsoft and other age-appropriate applications.  Students become comfortable using the computer as a tool and quickly gain confidence and proficiency.

Third and Fourth Grade.  Emerging computer skills are incorporated into projects that involve both core studies and special subjects, including Science, History, English, and Math.  Students’ keyboarding technique is monitored and corrected in order to prevent bad habits from forming.  The reminder to “use your home row” is reinforced during each class period.  Students complete comprehensive unit material and are expected to apply their Mavis Beacon instruction to improve their keyboarding proficiency. Instruction begins on efficient and safe internet research.

Fifth and Sixth Grade.  Students continue completing comprehensive unit material that challenges their higher comprehension and skill.  Proper hand- and wrist-positioning are emphasized and monitored by the teacher as students become more capable and comfortable with computer use.  Students become proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, and Word applications and are expected to integrate their computer skills into projects required in their core and special subject areas.  Students are taught internet safety, proper use of the internet, and how to stay focused while using the internet.

Seventh and Eighth Grade.   Students at this level can apply their computer skills in a comfortable and proficient way, integrating them appropriately with their academic studies. Students are challenged to improve the speed and accuracy of their keyboarding skills by transcribing the dictation of classic literature.  The subjects of Online Safety, Cyber Ethics, and Netiquette are discussed and emphasized as important tools to promote healthy online habits, serving to protect preteens from abusing or being abused online. Carden Academy strongly encourages parents (of this age group especially) to educate themselves on how to monitor and protect their adolescent children online.

Other Opportunities.  Adobe Photoshop and computer animation classes are examples of additional technology instruction offered through our after school enrichment program.
